Funeral ads banned by TfL over 'widespread offence'

Proposed adverts from Beyond showed beachgoers running with coffins rather than surfboards - with a pun on "roasting temperatures" and cremations. Its co-founder Ian Strang said the campaign was designed to be "edgy", but was not cruel or mocking.TfL said it had a "serious responsibility" over advertising. It told the BBC's Victoria Derbyshire programme its advertising partner had referred the adverts to the Committee of Advertising Practice, who advised that the "original posters proposed by Beyond were likely to cause serious and widespread offence."Our partner then worked with the brand to come up with a more acceptable campaign, which is now running on our network," it said. Mr Strang told the Victoria Derbyshire programme there was "a long history of edgy campaigns being used to cut through difficult issues."It's the same with death - there is a taboo around it."He said the current lack of conversation on the issue meant companies were able to "take advantage of [the bereaved] when we're in a weakened state" through their prices. The high cost of funerals has recently come under scrutiny, with two separate reviews having been launched.Mr Strang also questioned Transport for London's decision to ban the proposed advertisements, saying it was not the "arbiter of morality".He continued: "They've got [adverts] on payday loans, gambling... is a little bit of humour around death worse than all those products?"'Concerned for the bereaved'But funeral director Louise Winter said she was concerned "for the bereaved families I work with on a daily basis."If they were to see this on the Tube they might be quite upset by it," she added. She accepted the adverts were entertaining "providing you're not bereaved", but said the campaign had not been done in a "sensitive" or "cautious" manner."As a society we need a way to talk about death in a sensitive way that's emotionally intelligent, and I'm not sure these ads are doing that."Watch the BBC's Victoria Derbyshire programme on weekdays between 09:00 and 11:00 on...

Funerals held for Danforth shooting victims

Monday July 30, 2018. Ernest Doroszuk/Toronto Sun TORONTO — Mourners bid goodbye Monday to the two young victims slain in the mass shooting in Toronto’s Greektown neighbourhood.Reese Fallon, 18, and 10-year-old Julianna Kozis were laid to rest in separate funeral services that took place away from the public eye.Dignitaries including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Ontario Deputy Premier Christine Elliott were on hand at the Toronto funeral home where mourners came to pay their respects to Fallon, a recent high school graduate who was due to start studying nursing at Hamilton’s McMaster University in the fall. With police maintaining a heavy presence around the building, groups of teens holding hands and exchanging hugs quietly entered to say their goodbyes. In Markham, mourners arrived at a Greek Orthodox church where a service was taking place to honour Kozis.Julianna Kozis, 10, of Markham. (Toronto Police handout)A small group of funeral attendees watched as pallbearers lifted a white casket out of a hearse and into the ornate building. Some leaned on each other for support while others stood with their hands clasped in front of them. The girl’s family issued a brief statement expressing gratitude focollar the community’s overwhelming support but requesting privacy as they mourn their daughter.Shortly after attending Fallon’s funeral, an emotional Trudeau tried to offer reassurance to those grieving the two victims of the Greektown attack. He said watching the youthful mourners brought back personal recollections of the memorial service for his own brother, Michel, who died 20 years ago at age 23.“I just wanted to tell those young people, and everyone who is grieving and mourning that our loved ones, particularly extraordinary, beautiful ones like the two girls we lost, will be with us forever,” Trudeau said after laying flowers at a makeshift memorial for the victims of the attack.Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, left, pays his respects and places flowers at the f...
